The most common religions of Altaedeus are the faiths that the people of Coron brought with them. The religion of the Coronirans is polytheistic; it has many gods, although only the better known ones are detailed here. It has been said, however, that Altaedians have a god for every purpose.
Suitachi, God of War, Excellence in Battle, and Courage
Suitachi is the god of war and excellence in combat. He is represented as a tall man wearing a shining helm, armed with a luminous spear, and carrying a large, round shield. His priests are aggressive in attempting to spread his worship. It is said that he will strike dead any of his followers who dare to flee combat. His symbol is a round shield painted with a war helm, his animal form is a great silver-blue dragon.
Naritsu, God of Smithing and Alcohol
Naritsu is the Smith of the Gods and he is said to dwell deep inside Altae, beneath a violent volcano. He is served by fiery beings of his own creation. He creates extremely fine works in elaestrum and it is rumoured that certain of his followers have been given precious shields, armor, and swords on rare occasions to reward work in his name. It is also said that these items still exist somewhere in the Physical Realm. After laboring over his forge, it is said that he gets drunk and takes his pleasures with any he can find. He created alcohol as a releif from his work. The blacksmith's hammer and anvil are his symbols, his animal form is a shark.
Oria, Goddess of Healing, Comfort, Hearth, and Home
Oria is often depicted as a matronly wise-woman in her middle years. She is said to sometimes appear to those in great pain and comfort them. Her followers attempt to alleviate the suffering in the world by healing all without payment for services. Their symbol is a red cloth or tourniquet, her animal form is a small monkey.
Anaphora, Goddess of Nature and Animals
Anaphora is described as a tall, muscular woman of great beauty. Though she can appear anywhere she chooses, she typically picks impressive natural scenes to make her presence known and she is almost always accompanied in her physical form by two large lions. Her followers are mostly hermits who dwell in remote wilds, far from civilization and its trappings. Her symbol is a green-eyed lioness, her animal form is a cream and red lemur.
Yurime, Goddess of the Harvest and Fertility
Yurime is the goddess of the harvest, other agricultural processes, and fertility. She protects harvests from locusts, and damage by snow, storms, and floods. Yurime is especially revered by the peasant communities that surround and feed Altae's cities and offerings are made to her by women having trouble conceiving and women who wish to prevent themselves from conceiving. Yurime shows herself to humans in the form of a huge red doe, or a brown-haired, robust and buxom woman. She requires pious prayer, but no sacrifice and her shrines and temples are rarely ornate or large, but rather small and plain, usually of wood, serving a small, local, rural population. Her priestesses are usually middle-aged, childless women who assist births with their mid-wifery skills and tend to the general medical needs of the whole community.
Taishou, Creator of the Written Word, God of Love, Minstrels, Poetry, and Music.
Taishou, the "First Bard," was
said to have brought song and poetry, and the
very written word to humankind from the realm of the gods. Her followers worship her by from the realm of
the gods. Her followers worship her by creating new songs and they commonly commemorate the deeds performed by
heroes and villains of the day with their works. Her symbol is the lute and her animal form is a bat.
Eouen, Goddess of Vice and Worldly Pleasure
Eouen manifests in six forms and can be worshipped as the unity of all six forms or as any one of those forms alone. The most common form in which she is represented is that of a woman of incredible beauty with six arms, each arm symbolizing one of her other incarnations. She personifies the seeking of pleasure and every selfish aspect thereof; her worshippers believe that nothing should stand in the way of whatever it is they desire and that mankind consistently follows her bidding even when they claim they have more noble pursuits. Her priestesses worship her in large orgies that end in great, cannibalistic feasts. Eouen's followers have a city in the mountains northwest of Eruhall called Wintersett. Many people consider the city a cesspit of filth and debauchery; Eouen's worshipers, however, consider it the most sacred of cities. Her symbol is a black orchid intertwined with a red rose.
Dhio, God of Pestilence, Death, Suffering, and Pain
Dhio is the "Father of Pestilence," "Lad of Pain," and the "Eater of the Dead." His followers believe that the only way to commune with him is through pain--and that of others works just as well as their own. He causes plague at will, and covens of his worshippers have been suspected of spreading plague intentionally as it is considered an ultimate form pigrimage for one of his worshippers to infect themselves with a deadlyplague and then travel from place to place, spreading the disease as far as they can, until they finally drop dead. For this reason, his worshippers must be secretive--they are often killed as soon as they are found out. His worshippers, it is said, were responsible for the plague that devastated Coron and forced the Great Migration to Altaedeus. Dhio appears as a gaunt man with a white, completely featureless face mounted on his steed, Keir, when in human guise, and in animal guise he is shown as a black jackal.
Kaijyu, Goddess of Platonic Love, Beauty, and Peace
Kaijyu appears as a beautiful, young woman. Her very presence is said to entrance all who are near her, and those have heard the goddess speaks in a soft voice accompanied by birdsong (and, conversely, some say you can hear her speaking when birds sing). Those accepted to the ranks of her worshippers are always young, beautiful women who have taken vows of chastity. Their goal is to spread peaceful, platonic love among the people. Her symbol is a white lotus, her animal form is a drake.
Reāleigh, Goddess of Chance and Trickery
Reāleigh appears as a woman with smooth, pitch-black skin, and she is always surrounded by an aura of darkness. She sometimes travels the land, hidden from mortal view, granting luck to some and misfortune to others. While normally random, she will also sometimes intentionally attempt set apart close companions in this manner in order to promote strife. Her followers always attempt to bring chaos and disharmony into orderly society through deception and trickery; though their acts are normally non-violent and border on the mischevious, they often provoke violence and strife. Her symbol is a mask, or sometimes a serpentine dagger, blade pointing skyward.
Nokomis, Lord of the Sea
Nokomis appears as a huge man with pale blue skin and a long beard. He is very often kind to his devoted worshippers, calming stormy seas and providing them with winds to speed their journeys, but he is vicious to those who have lost faith. Nokomis's favorite method of expressing his displeasure is to cause violent storms at sea, overturn ships, and flood coastal towns. His symbol is a conch shell. Legends speak of creatures Nokomis has saved from death and transformed into mer-folk who dwell in the seas and serve his purposes. His animal form is a giant sea serpent.
Arellus, Goddess of Light and Truth
Arellus is depicted as a short, lithe woman dressed in shining armor and wielding a powerful longbow that shoots bolts of purest light. Arellus' followers interpret "Her Truth" to be purity or good: it is easiest to define as the opposite of whatever her followers declare as evil. She commands several companies of Semnos (supernatural winged soldiers) and she and her forces are in constant battle with the powers of evil. Her followers seek to shed "Her Light" into the farthest reaches of the land, banishing evil wherever they can find it. They are directed, however, to show mercy to those they have defeated if they are determined to be redeemable. It is probably in this concept of forgiveness and mercy that Arellus' followers differ most from Palsled's. Worship of Arellus, however, is also very popular among the Arnikians, though the followers of Palsled have managed to stay in positions of real power. Her symbol is the golden disc of the sun surroundes by a ring of ice, her animal form is a white tiger.
>Palsled, God of Justice and Law
Palsled is ideally pictured as an avenging warrior and the ultimate holy knight. His most devout followers are knight templars, pure of body and spirit. They give all their possessions and earnings, if any, over to the faith to further its cause. Ideally, they limit what they own as individuals to that which the Order itself has bestowed upon them and nothing else. Palasled is the patron deity of Midcross, and the city is dedicated to his cause. His animal form is a Silver Kitsune
Reijt, God of Magic, Study, and Learning
Reijt is usually represented as a venerable old man who can bend anything
to his will. He is revered for granting insight into the mystical arts,
especially those related to magical and alchemical pursuits. Reijt is
the patron deity of Dhiken, and his animal form is a squirrel.
